2011 News: New Suits Mean No More Records in Swimming

New Suits Mean No More Records in Swimming By ANDREW DAMPF AP Sports Writer Yesterday, 3:01 AM Excerpt: As world championships approach, swimming's world record drought reaches 18 months Swimming's world-record drought has reached 18 months, and as next month's world championships in Shanghai draw nearer the sport's close-knit community is starting to wonder when it will be broken. . . . Besides the suits, another noticeable change on the pool deck these days is swimmer's physiques, especially among the men, since overall mass seemed to improve performance in the more floatable rubberized suits. "They've all suddenly gotten smaller and slimmed down," observed Coventry, who took a year off after the 2009 worlds. From abcnews.go.com/story

Sun Yang missed Grant Hackett's 1500m record by 8 seconds in China's national swim earlier this year (recall that he was within a second of the record in 2010 Asian Games last November). According to this Australian report, Denis Cotterell, Sun's new coach and Hackett's former coach, said that they (referring to both Sun and Cotterell) had decided to "save it for Shanghai": www.theaustralian.com.au/.../story-e6frg7mf-1226036246012

how about Lochte 200 IM & maybe 400 IM too, he broke the SCM WRs in a jammer. maybe Phelps 200 FL? 200IM may get broken, but I doubt it as Lochte does not seem to be in great shape. There's no way Lochte gets close to 4:03 in 400 IM, and Phelps is not in any shape to swim 1:51 in 200 fly.

A big +1 to that. He's also got a good chance in the 800 and 400. He's top-ranked in the world in the 200 but I don't think he'll threaten the record there. Some others to watch are Rebecca Soni and Camille LaCourt. Have people forgotten the WR in the 800? There's no way Sun Yang gets close to the 800 WR which stands at 7:32. He might swim under Hackett's textile best of 7:38 though. Rebecca Soni has a great chance of breaking Pierse's 200 WR as it is the softest suit WR (not much change from Jones' old textile best). Lacourt may break the 50 and 100 back WRs

and let's not just leave out the WR HOLDER Biedermann! Is this a sarcasm? What is Biedermann's 400 textile PB? 3:45? 3:46?

It will be fitting if park tae hwan takes the 400 WR and sun yang the 1,500 WR. Both are coached by australian coaches: park by Michael Bohl, and sun by Dennis Cotterel.
  • 200IM may get broken, but I doubt it as Lochte does not seem to be in great shape. I think you're wrong. He just hasn't rested at all for a long course meet. You're going to see a completely different swimmer in Shanghai than you've seen so far this summer.

200IM may get broken, but I doubt it as Lochte does not seem to be in great shape. . Anyone that has actually followed Lochte career, would know that inseason meets, like Santa Clara, Indy or Charlotte, he does not swim very well. His coach, Greg Troy, keeps him in heavy training for weeks(even months at somepoint) Lochte is one of the best taper swims out there. Look at any of his results from the previous spring/summers. There is a pattern there.

Anyone that has actually followed Lochte career, would know that inseason meets, like Santa Clara, Indy or Charlotte, he does not swim very well. He always wears square-cut briefs, too. Quite draggy. Based on that I would guess he doesn't shave, either.
