Eating before early morning work outs

I'm about to start having swim practices at 6am.  I have never swam a full workout this early.  I plan on waking up at 5am to get to this practice.  I'm wondering if I should practice on an empty stomach or eat something.  If eating is recommended, what should I eat or consume?

  • My preference is fasted workouts. I've been doing it for about 6 years now; both in the water and in the gym. I also prefer a low carb lifestyle, more of a carb cycling method. It may take some experimentation on your part to see what makes you feel best.

  • What do you like about fasted workouts. I am exploring more about low-carb lifestyle and possibly intermittent fasting and would like to know your experience

  • I don't feel like I'm bogged down trying to digest food and workout at the same time. Digestion takes energy; so I usually workout at 0350 in the morning, shower, go to work, and eat sometime between 0800 and noon. Being low carb is great, I'm not hungry, I don't get sore or tired regardless how intense the workout.

    My meals are simple:

Breakfast is typically 4 eggs with bacon bits and Mexican cheese with 2 slices of beef bacon.

If I have lunch, which I don't most days, its a homemade measured out 8 oz hamburger patty with Colby jack cheese and mustard.

Dinner is either a NY strip steak or Ribeye steak with a salad (2 cups romaine lettuce, parmesan cheese and light balsamic vinaigrette.

    Hope this helps
