So at the time I'm typing this, I look down, and the threads on the front page contain:
Tennis Elbow and Shoulder Pain
Rotator Cuff Surgery
Shoulder Impingement
Broken Thumb
Anyway, so a lot of us are dealing with injuries. As for me? Turn ulnar collateral ligament in my right thumb. Happened on 12/30. Took a week and a half to diagnose, as it didn't seem that bad when it happened. Anyway, surgery a little later, and 4 weeks with a pin in my thumb (sticking out through the skin). Doctor wouldn't let me swim due to risk of infection. 4 weeks. Grumble, that's 6 weeks total. Pin out yesterday. Still no swimming for another 4 weeks! Arg. It is bad enough I struggle to button my jeans (button fly). But now I can't swim for another month? I'm looking at almost 2.5 months. I'm never gonna get my pre-COVID form back!
Red60, yes - medial epicondylitis (golfers elbow).
I suffered 10 years ago and had to get a shot. It worked.
Meaning, cortisone? I'm not there yet but good to know that's a possibility if necessary
Well, I'm cheating. Started doing kick sets a week ago, of thereabouts. I'm supposed to "not submerge" the hand until the next follow-up, a bit over a week away. So......I figured if I'm approaching 3000 yards of kicking (no fins, either), then I might as well do a little normal swimming in warm up and cool down.
Oh.
My.
Heavens.
The water felt like MOLASSES. Oh my lord it was killing me. I honestly figured that I'd been trying to stay in shape with what I could, and that I'd be okay, but I was concerned about my form. Well......my form still seems to be pretty decent, my DPS is on par at around 12-13 strokes per 25 yards. But my lord it was so tough moving through the water.

When I had shoulder problems, they told me that if I had had more than two cortisone shots in the shoulder, then surgery was out.
Now, shoulders aren't elbow, and the doc also seemed to brush off the combination of a recent shot and one a couple of decades ago. I'm not sure if the shrug of was because equals is not more than, or because 20 years is some time.
Either way, cortisone is not without consequences..
WEEELL ----- Today I got back in the pool after 4 months out of water!
Both shoulder and foot/ankle are really sore but, I do remember how to swim and it felt really nice to swim again!
1st Covid shot last fri. also!

Well that's good to know! It's seeming a bit more manageable as I go. Have managed to bring the 8 pound dumbbells up from the basement; presumably I will actually use them before too long...

First "normal" workout in 2-1/2 months. Oh, boy. I remember how to swim.....until I get tired. And then I lose form. DPS just kept getting worse. Added 4 seconds/50 to my interval (40X50, normally on :56, this time on 1:00). Going to try a Hackett set tomorrow. Probably start the UDK set next week, and jsut do some distance focused stuff this week.
Let me add a new one - knee replacement!
Old injuries have caught up with my left knee. Limitations of bone-on-bone, etc. have made hard kicking impossible which, for me, means a slower cadence when I swim.
So, I am starting down the path for knee replacement in the Fall. Is there anyone out there who has returned to serious, competitive swimming after this surgery?
Thanks for your stories.
