2018 Spring Format

I see that National Championships page lists the 2018 Spring Nationals as SCY or SCM (TBD). How and when will this decision be made, and how do we make our voices heard on this subject? I, for one, feel very strongly the meet should be swum in short course yards. This is the culmination of the scy season. An scm season has organically developed after lcm and ending in December. Please do not turn this all on its head because we are also calling this meet an "International" Championship.
  • I will be attending either way. I responded to the post-Riverside email as undecided. But the more that I have thought about it, the more that I am in favor of SCM. Its the rarity of the distance that makes it more exciting.

I like the idea of trying a spring nationals as a SCM but I doubt that I could attend, given the time of year.
  • Since there are two threads with the same topic I am commenting twice: I think switching to SCM is a terrible idea. For those of us who set goals and plan our swimming, to have a sudden switch from SCY to SCM plays havoc with goals for the SCY season. I swim Nationals every year to obtain best times and break records as an end-of-season event. That would mean no end-of-season event for SCY next year. I just moved into a new age group and have already begun thinking about my SCY goals for next year. If something like this is in the works there should be a lot more warning than a less than one year heads up. SCM season is from Sept through December. The SCM season has worked well in its current time of year and has not prevented those who can from posting top 10 FINA rankings. Very disappointing if it happens.
  • As a guy that has made top ten in both SCY & SCM , I need more rest from SCM events than SCY. Nationals gives me more time between events than a regular meet. This may be my age kicking my butt, something that has not been mentioned yet.
  • The decision rests with the USMS Championship Committee. I have heard comments like the one from Ron above (strongly against SCM), from people like ChrisS/JenniferP (prefer SCM) and people like GaryP (will be there either way). The challenge is trying to decide what suits the majority. All Riverside entrants were given an opportunity to fill out a survey about this subject after the meet and we should have the results soon. We don't have the means to poll the entire membership, but asking those who just attended Spring Nationals seemed like as good of a place as any to ask prospective swimmers their opinions on the two course formats. A decision on which course will be used is expected no later than September. The official deadline per the rulebook is six months prior to the start of the meet. • :applaud::bed:Yards it is. More rest for the old guy !!!
  • I'd prefer the SCM format. That will make the SCY zone championships more important toward national rankings.
