  • John Wayne Airport is the closest to Mission Viejo (Airport is sometimes called Orange County -airline code SNA (for Santa Ana)). You might want to check prices about flying into Los Angeles International (LAX) it is about 30-40 miles away (my guess), but more airlines fly there so you might get a better deal. (United wanted over $300 to fly from San Francisco to John Wayne - much better pricing flying to Los Angeles). michael

998 Michael is correct. John wayne is about half (or less) distance then LAX, but little more expensive to fly into, so what you save on the airfare, you may end up spending on the shuttle to get to Mission Viejo. Now, if you're renting a car for the week, that may not be much of an issue. Being that this is a car dependent Southern California, I would rent a car, even if I took advantage of the meet shuttle, I'd still want to have a car to go sightseeing, or to dinner etc. I found out that enterprise also rents passenger vans, it might be a good idea for groups of teammates to pool and rent a van. When we host large kids meets, they often rent vans, or drive in their own. When it comes to flying, I use this rule of thumb, Short distances, like Vegas or Bay area, I fly from John Wayne, it's a quick trip. Going all the way to LAX (up to an hour drive) and getting a ride or paying for the shuttle is too much hassle for an hour flight. To John Wayne, it;s short enough of a trip wjere I could ask a friend to drop me off and pick me up without putting them out of the way a lot. Now, for a cross country flight, where I'm planing on using up most of the day travelling, rather then just an hour or two, it's worh it to get a reduced airfare and fly from LAX. Sometimes I leave my car at a long term lot, other times take a shuttle. I'm sort of a creature of comfort and don't like to depend on others too much, and tend to rent a car wherever I go. All the Hotels are between 3-5 miles from the pool, even the closest ones, so unless you are planing on taking the shuttle, you will need a car. Much like any typical suburban area, shopping, grocery stores, restaurants are relatively spread out, and you will need a car to make your way around. I would not recommend public transportation. It is not used much, and it is not frequent. If anyone is dying of curiosity, there's some info on a public bus system here: http://www.octa.net/

If you are renting a car, but advised, there is limited parking near the facility. Swimmers should plan on parking on the street and walking several blocks. The facility is in a residential neighborhood. Renting a shuttle van or car pooling is a better idea. There are shuttle vans running from a number of the hotels and the shuttle will run to the social also. As I happen to be visiting Mission Viejo today, I can tell you the weather here is beautiful and the facility is excellent. If you haven't signed up for the meet yet, you had better do so. You don't want to miss out on a great event.
