How many people form USMS go to compete at masters worlds? I found qualifying times, but nothing above and beyond that. Can anyone give me more info. Also, is there any sort of sponsorship or is it if you want to go you have to pay your own way. Anyone know who is hosting this year (2005)? Thanks!
The FINA Masters World Championships is held ever two years. In 2004, Riccione had 8130 competitors entered with 6306 swimmers entered and 258 from the US. There were 1082 entries for the Open Water swim with 55 from the US. Also, there were 248 water polo players, 306 synchro swimmers, and 227 divers. The next World Championships is in 2006 at Stanford University in California. The Host country usually has the most competitors so a lot more USMS people will attend in 2006.
There are a few sponsorships around, but you must have the right connections to find these. Some clubs also help their members out with expenses.
There is also a 2005 World Masters Games in Edmonton, Canada. See www.2005worldmasters.com
Hey Barry,
maybe somebody has the percentage of US swimmers that went to Indy in 1992. Didn't know we could share the FINA Worlds stats file. Hopefully we can get over 60 countries to go to Stanford too!

To anyone who may want to reply to my last post:
I just want to let you know that I found answers to my questions fom my last post about the SCY Natiionals and so you can ignore those questions....BUT I am still seeking answers about the question I had about the World Championships.....Since the World Championships are put on by FINA and not the USMS, I am guessing the rules for qualifying could be different than for Nationals??

I am new to this site (and Masters swimming) so "please" have some patience with me on this....but does anyone know where we can find the information about qualifying to swim a particular event (or events) at the World Championships in 2006 in San Francisco? Is there a cut off date to qualify by? Are there SCY time equivelences ect...?
And the same question as above....(only about the SCY National Championships in Fort Lauderdale in 2005)........Related Question: I am interested in swimming the 400 yard I.M. at the 2005 SCY Nationals ....but I wasn't sure if I had to actually swim that particular event at some swim meet first (prior to some cut off date) in order to swim it at Nationals?
Also....One final related question (sorry!!):....I am a member of a newly started YMCA Masters team in a realtively small town....We don't have many swimmers (and I may be the only one interested in swimming in any competitions).....Will my times at a YMCA sanctioned meet count towards qualifying for the USMS SCY Nationals?....(or will I have to actually swim my events at a USMS sanctioned meet first in order to qualify for the USMS SCY Nationals?)
Anyone with answers to one or all of the above questions will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
newmastersswimmer

Its not available yet. It is two years away. The Qual times have to be approved by the FINA Bureau, and we are planning to make the presentation to the Bureau in July, 2005.
We will post where and what the qualifying times are when they are available. If you look at this years qual times for Riccione, you will have an idea of what the times will be.
Is there a cut off date to qualify by?
No. But if you dont swim that qual time or faster, you do not get a time at Worlds.
