I’ve been an open water swimmer and open water race director for over 25 years and I’ve still got a lot to learn about open water safety. This is a great opportunity for me to become a better safer swimmer/event director.

Yes, its true. Leslie Thomas of Swim Art is getting a permit for a swim from the Golden Gate Bridge to Aquatic Park. (good news, because once there you can pay a small day use fee and have a nice hot shower and sauna at the South End Rowing Club)

On behalf of U.S. Masters Swimming and Pacific Masters Swimming LMSC, thank you very much for attending the Protecting Athletes: Open Water Swimming Safety Conference. This e-mail is provided for your information. Over 130 open water swimming race directors, administrators, lifesaving professionals, doctors, writers, athletes and officials have registered. Attendees are coming from all over the U.S. as well as Australia, Bermuda, Canada, Cayman Islands, Great Britain, Japan, and Mexico.
Online registration is closed. However, we will accept walk-up registrations. The registration fee is $135 for USMS members and $185 for non-USMS members.
Conference Schedule
All events take place at the San Francisco Airport Marriott. The address is 1800 Old Bayshore Highway, Burlingame, CA 94010, (650) 692-9100.
Friday, March 18
5-7PM: Registration check in is at the San Ramon Foyer
7-9PM: Conference networking/social reception in the San Ramon Room. Light appetizers will be provided; cash bar will be available
Saturday, March 19
7AM: Registration check in and complimentary coffee and pastries in the Irvine Room Foyer
8:15AM: General Conference begins in the Irvine Room
12PM: Boxed lunches will be available for Conference attendees in the Irvine Room Foyer
1:30PM: Case Studies begin in the Newport Beach Room and Anaheim Room
4:30PM: General Conference resumes in the Irvine Room
7PM: Closing Speech by Maddy Crippen in the Irvine Room
Sunday, March 20
8AM: Complimentary coffee and pastries in the Irvine Room Foyer
9AM: Conference summary and wrap up in the Irvine Room
12PM: Conference ends

Event directors are encouraged to bring information and brochures on their events so it may be shared with other event directors.
Friday Night Networking Social
You are invited to the conference kick-off and networking social from 7-9PM in the San Ramon Room. Network with like-minded open water professionals from Australia, Bermuda, Canada, Cayman Islands, Great Britain, Japan, Mexico and across the United States from California, Connecticut, New York, Florida, Virginia, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Illinois, Utah, Idaho, North Carolina, Indiana, South Carolina, Georgia, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Minnesota, Vermont, Hawaii, Michigan, and Texas. Appetizers will be provided. A cash bar will be available.
Video Taping
USMS will be video taping the conference. Once it is archived and available for viewing, you will be sent a link.
Onsite Restaurants
Coffee and pastries will be available Saturday and Sunday morning in the Irvine Room Foyer. Boxed lunches will be available Saturday afternoon in the Irvine Room Foyer. Additionally, the San Francisco Airport has several onsite restaurants, lounges and a Starbucks.
San Francisco Airport Hotel Shuttle Information
At any domestic airline, go one floor above baggage claim and exit to the outside. Go toward center outside island and locate Courtesy Hotel Shuttle Bus area. Take the shuttle that is shared by the San Francisco Marriott and Hyatt Regency Burlingame. The shuttle service schedule is:
4AM-9AM: Every 10 minutes
9AM-7PM: Every 15 minutes
7PM-11PM: Every 10 minutes
11PM-Midnight: Every 15 minutes
Midnight-4AM: Every 30 minutes
