Looking ahead to 2012, they have posters here in Sweden about the next FINA Masters to be held in Riccione, Italy. I went there when they held it in 2004 and had a great time. The dates are June 2-16, 2012.
usms nationals was 1800 and ran 20 lanes at a time, started at 8am and finished at 4pm (usually). 6000+ swimmers would mean use of the pools 24hrs in a row. simply not possible.
There are fewer events per day, spreading them out over a week so that will help. But you are right, there will be some very long days. I think Wednesday will be particularly brutal, with 4 events (the other days have 1-3).
Worlds at Stanford had 3000 swimmers with the same event schedule and I recall them lasting much of the day.
