Hello, My Name is Stan, & I've just learned to swim a month ago, I've been a long distance runner for about 30 years.(since I was 14.) I recently Injured my back early this year, so I had to learn to swim to stay in shape. i'm VERY limited in my swimming. i.e.: the only stroke that I know how to do is the freestyle, and I cannot tread water. I can swim about 60 yards non stop. then I rest from two to three minutes, then I swim another 40 yards I repeat this process until I've completed 400 yards/meters. I swim at the Middeltown N.Y. YMCA. the pool is 20 yards/meters. I joined U.S. Masters Swimming to receive some help in improving my stroke, stamina, & technique. As well as to learn how to tread, and some other types of strokes. Any help that you can give is GREATLY appreciated.
  • Hello, My Name is Stan, & I've just learned to swim a month ago, . Hi Stan! So sorry I missed your earlier post. Welcome, welcome! It sounds like you're going about things the right way to improve your stamina in the water - Usually pools are 25 yards in the US. So doing repetitions of a length (25yd) at a time with rest at each wall is a good strategy. As you feel more comfortable, you can do two lengths (50 yds) at a time with a break between each one. You might also consider taking a few adult swimming lessons with someone that can give you some tips on stroke efficiency specific to you. I'm curious to know how things are going - if you're still around, please let us know
  • This is a little late, but I was wondering how this worked out for you? I've never swam much, but recently have gotten really into it for weight-loss purposes. And welcome to you, too, Slother! How often are you getting in the pool?

This is a little late, but I was wondering how this worked out for you? I've never swam much, but recently have gotten really into it for weight-loss purposes. I've been doing that, trying to eat cleaner, and taking an ECA stack (this) only on days I don't swim. I've lost a few lbs so far, but would like to lose more!
