I did a 50 fly in my first swim meet in 20+ years with minimal training so I thought I would have no problem doing a 100 three months later. Since then I have trained harder and improved significantly in the freestyle with speed and endurance yet I still die after 50 yards of butterfly. 95% of my training is free as the fly takes everything out of me. At the end of a 2000 yard workout I might do one 50. That might not sound like much to you all but I can do a set of like 15 x 100 which is well beyond what i have been capable in years.
Once a week I might do 10X25 fly or I might just see how far I can go. I always die after the 2nd turn. Complete breakdown. Yet I could do a 50 months ago without any concern at all of just completing the distance.
My stroke may be fundamentally flawed. Maybe I just got by as a youth on raw power. The only form I have is all out until the momentum is lost and then it is complete breakdown withing 3 strokes. I don't know if there is some kind of hesitation stroke I can use to get through, but at this point I think I need sets and strategies to build up to it on the stroke I have.
after just swimming another 100 fly, I want to add to my previous post, that lifting weights could really be beneficial.
I felt fine with my swim through about the first 85m. I was able to drop my time to 1:08.03 --> 30.99 / 37.04 But the sad thing was I opened my 200 IM in 30.59 and still swam a Masters personal best time.
My friend swam his race in the following heat 1:06.72 31.39 / 35.33
afterwards we came to the conclusion that I needed to start lifting weights.....
I've done a handful of 100s - always ending up in breakdown mode for the last 10 or 15 yards, but at least I can complete it.
Well, at least you know you can complete the distance. Now you can focus on your race strategy. Just remember to relax, keep your head and chest down and hips up. Think forward not up! Good luck!
Hi, I am new the forum, I swim in a Italian masters team.
Like Herb I am preparing the 100 butterfly for this weekend, in the last 3 weeks after about 1,000 meters of heating and exercises of butterfly, I tried to train with repeated by 25/50/75/100 meters.
For example:
4x (8x25 fly with 10 "stop) between each set 3x100 freestyle
or,
4x (4x50 fly with 20 "stop) between each set 200 freestyle,
or,
4x (75 fly, 30 "stop, 50 fly, 20" stop, 25 fly) between each set 3x50 freestyle.
This was the first time I tried to train this way, Sunday will see any improvement.
Compliments to syd for describing the moviement and the sensation of the butterfly, is exactly what needs to be done.:applaud:
There I will be grateful if you have advice / training for me for a good 100 butterfly ...
Sorry for my no good english...
Thanks to all...!!!
Hi Syd,
I’havent good news…
In warm my tecnique was perfect, exactly like you write, hips up and head and chest down with good slipping, push forward, no up, recovery relax and breath down.
In the race I have wrong the breakout and so the coordination of stroke...After the first wrong stroke for me was very difficult improve...1.16.40 is my result, no good!!! :bitching: (Master 40 not ex-agonist )
What you think about my training, can I do better?
Can you give me some advice?
Please HELP ME!!!
Thankyou very much!!!
Is correct breakout or breakdown...? The second?
"Breakout" is the correct word.
I know what you mean: if your rhythm isn't good from the breakout, it is difficult to correct it.
Don't breathe on the first stroke after the breakout. Breathe only on the second stroke, and see if that is better.
Your training sets look good. This set must be pretty brutal:
4x (75 fly, 30 "stop, 50 fly, 20" stop, 25 fly) between each set 3x50 freestyle. If the 100 is your focus event, you want to include, at least one, fast 100 (for time) in your training every week. Here you can work on things like; your dive, breakout, SDK's, rhythm and speed. It will give you a good indication of what you need to improve on.
1:16:40 is a good time!
Good luck.
Oh yes Syd,
usually I breath at the second stroke.
I reviewed my race and have noted a recovery whit arm expanses and long but too hight and the rythm of the strokes was very slow, for increase it can be all right drill on 25 and 50 meters in progression with long breack???
What's SDK's?
Thankyou very much for your help and your kindness!!!:)
Easy.

Yes, it is okay to swim 25's and 50's. Just remember, in order to get a feel for the race as a whole, you need to swim a 100 every now and then.
SDK refers to the underwater part of the race (when you dive off the blocks or push of the walls) and, in the Streamline position, Dolphin Kick. :) Check out this thread for some great advice from Ande.
