hey guys, happy new year and all that!! and as its new year, its time to make a change (a little one mind) and be a bit more serious about my swimming. its quite difficult at times because sometimes i really do have to spend all my time doing the more important aspect of my life (my degree) but once all this report writing and exams are done i should have time really get back into my training. so ive gone the whole hog and found things to do on land and in the water. firstly my swimming and what im training for .... i dont care for distance much, more of a sprinter and in speed lifesaving if you have to do more than 200m then you wont be doing it in a pool and thats a whole new kettle of open water fish. most events are short, sharp, multi-disipline and required a lot of strength and power. for strength training.... im using that weight training for swimmers from bodybuilding.com.... the Lezak one. www.bodybuilding.com/.../jasonlezak1.htm i have been doing that since october actually and i have definately noticed a difference. for core i found this very useful document produced by Dr Ralph Richards assisted by coach John Atkinson at the Arena Sports Center western Australia. its on my skydrive here .... cid-f6441ec8cc4445db.skydrive.live.com/.../Public it seems aimed at age groupers but core work is core work and i've decided to take on the more advanced exercises from this document and modify/replace others to keep the intensity up. next up its just the swimming.... which is a lot harder in my opinion because i know sweet FA about cycles and different aerobic levels and what not. we dont have a coach here on our speed lifesaving team either, we just pick sets almost at random and just do them. i know thats better than doing nothing, but at the same time i cant see it getting us that far either! for now though im just picking my way through JMillers fun and fast thread picking out all the sprint heavy sets and fast middle distance stuff. that aside i dont know what else to do. i am quite encouraged by my progress thus far, and even after nearly 2 weeks of stuffing my face and lounging around at home over christmas i managed a fairly respectable low 25 for a 50m free time trial at the end of a session. this is new for me, usually that time only happens in training on a very good day. but lately its been a regular occurance, and im feeling much stronger on the back end of 50's and 100's as well. i know ive waffled for a bit there, but any input/comment on what im doing would be much appreciated cheers! alex
