hello! I know the less strokes per length the better, but i have no idea how good it is when I do a given number of strokes, i'm 5'9'', male, slim, small hands and feet, good ankle flexibility though, what would be the ideal number of strokes for a 50m pool for front crawl, backstroke, breastroke and butterfly??? thank you!

  • Well, the ideal stroke count is one that gets you to the other end of the pool in the fewest strokes in the least time. I know that sounds trite but it's true. Everyone is different. Some have a stronger kick, some have a better pull, better streamlines, etc. Instead of focusing on what others do, play Swim Golf. What you do is you time yourself (or get someone with a stopwatch) and you swim one length of each stroke and you count your strokes. Then you add the stroke count to your time and that is your 'score'. Then you work on improving your score thru drills, strength training, better endurance, etc. For example, my Swim Golf score at LCM Nats was 70.13 (27.13, 43 strokes) for 50 Free and a week later at Zones it was 68.58 (26.58, 42 strokes).
