Workout Advice for Swimmers / Runners Build? (w/Photos)

Hi, from a noob to these forums. Hopefully someone can offer some advice for my fitness questions, so I'll start out by setting the stage and giving some background info. I'm a 26 year-old male, 6'0" and weigh 155 lbs. (plus or minus a few, depending on when I weigh myself). I consider myself a relatively skinny guy and have been for as long as I remember. Also, I'd say that I have a fairly fast metabolism, as despite the fact that I usually have a very good appetite, I've never had to worry about watching my weight or gaining weight on account of eating too much. Even so, I consider my typical diet fairly healthy - bran cereal, yogurt, and OJ for breakfast, a salad and homemade soup for lunch, and some variety of rice or pasta with chicken or beef for dinner. I've never been a huge fitness fanatic and currently don't belong to a gym, nor am I much of a swimmer, which probably leaves you wondering why I chose to post here in a swimming forum. I've browsed for information in other fitness forums on the web, but I've found that most of them tend to focus on bodybuilding and gaining mass and very defined muscle, which isn't my goal at all. Instead, I'm more interested in developing a more slender, toned build which is fairly common among swimmers and those who participate in aquatic sports, so that's why I thought this might be a good place to seek information. For the last few years, I've been doing pushups, crunches, and some arm exercises with 30 lb. dumbbells at home, usually 3-4 times a week for each exercise routine. Additionally, as weather allows, I run about 2.5 miles 3 or 4 times a week (fewer when it's really cold). I realize that running 2.5 miles isn't much at all, but I find running outside to be really relaxing and don't have too much time in the morning to run any more than that. I haven't really varied my exercise routines much in the last few years (I know, I know...a big no no!), so I'm really not surprised that I haven't done all that much to reach my fitness goals. That said, I'd like to change up my workout, so hopefully someone can help lead me in the right direction. Just to show you what I have to work with, here are a few photos I took the other day: i369.photobucket.com/.../082508_1.jpg i369.photobucket.com/.../082508_2.jpg i369.photobucket.com/.../082508_3.jpg In terms of my fitness goals, instead of bulking up and building sizable muscle, I'd instead like to figure out what I need to do in order to get what most would refer to as a "swimmers physique" or "runners physique". Generally speaking, I'm talking about lean arms, toned and lean (but not overly built) pecs, abs, and stomach, and lean legs. As I was watching the Olympics the last couple of weeks, I noticed that the perfect example of a build I'd like to achieve is that of USA diver Thomas Finchum, especially when I noticed that our height and weight are nearly identical. Below are a few photos I found on the web. His toned yet not overly-build arms, pecs, and abs are exactly the type of build and look I'd really like to achieve, if possible. i369.photobucket.com/.../TF1.jpg i369.photobucket.com/.../TF2.jpg i369.photobucket.com/.../TF3.jpg So, with all of that out on the table, I have a few questions. First, I'm curious, based on my photos, as to the best way to describe my current build (for the lack of a better term). Am I slim? Average? Pudgy? I'm looking for honesty here. As I mentioned before, I?m 6'0" and 155 lbs., but I've always wondered how others would categorize my body. Despite the fact that 155 lbs. might be a little below average for my height, I still feel that there's a fair amount of fat covering my abs, which I think is particularly noticeable in my side profile photo. Also, I don't know if this is possible just by looking at photos, but could anyone estimate what my approximate %BF might be? Next, a reality check. Given my stats and photos, is there even a chance that I could achieve a build like this, provided that I undertake a proper fitness plan to work toward my goal? I know that generally speaking, there are lots of different body types, so I'm just curious if there's a chance that I could ever achieve that kind of slim, toned build or if I should just count my losses. Secondly, if I do, conceivably, stand a chance, what would be the best way to go about it? In other words, what specific types of exercises/routines should I focus on (either stuff I could do at home or at a gym)? Finchum, like many other guys with the swimmers/runners type build, seems to have a flat, almost square-ish build to their pecs, as opposed to somewhat rounded, built pecs that stick out. Is this purely a factor of body type, or are there specific exercises that result in that type of appearance? This kind of ties in with the previous question. Actually, maybe it is the same question. Anyway, what would be the "keys" to achieving a build like that? Granted, I'm definitely a greenhorn when it comes to this kind of stuff, but to me it looks like it's not so much about building muscle (although I'm sure that factors in somewhat) as it is cutting body fat to accentuate the pecs and abs. I realize that the seemingly obvious response to my questions might be something along the lines of "Well, just start running and/or swimming more.", but I know there has to be more to it. That said, if anyone could answer my questions or offer any additional suggestions or information to steer me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!
