I am a 24 year old firefighter from North Carolina and I am looking to get back into swimming. I swam competively for all four years in high school and just never kept up with it after that. Does anyone have any advice on how to get back into swimming for the purpose of getting back in shape? Thanks, Corey

Just start doing it. I swam l throughout my youth and went on to college swimming. That said, when I got back in some 20 years later, I struggled to do even 50 yard repeats at first. Within 2 years I had gained much of my abilities back, and even made the Top Ten list in a few events. Work you way up slowly (maybe start out with 2,000 yds or so)...and then see if you can find a group. Organized workouts with other swimmers will keep you motivated, and stop you from slacking off. It can be hard to train on your own after a while. Maybe your local pool has a team? If not you can do a search and see where a local masters group might be located in your area. Good Luck. http://www.ncmasters.org/

I would say, just start swimming again and make sure to not over do it. Try some 50's and 100's and swim relaxed. Every week increase your overall distance by 10% if you are swimming at least 3x's a week. Mentally, refuse to give up and set your ming to rebuilding your endurance, set short and long term goals and write them down, so they will be a constant reminder. Have fun!!
