Workout for the falling apart lady

 I feel embarrassed to ask for help here because I couldn't find anyone whose body is similar to mine. But, I gotta ask for help.... Due to my overpronation of my feet (both genetics and overweight) and my falling off of my horses over the years, my L5 disc is about halfway out and L4 is just pushing to get out. The Monday after the visit to ER twice over the weekend, I started rowing. Fast forward to two years later, I am doing ok but still need to get rid of at least 35 pounds - I lost 35 pounds in the process. However, I was really dismayed at myself for not being able to complete the Master's swim workout yesterday. The workout consisted of: 600 (3+1) warmup 600 (Str, pull, kick) 4X : 25 drill 50 work 75 (first 25 work) (50 push yourself) 100 (work middle) 200 cool down 4 X 100 50 cool down I only accomplished 1/2 of that program which was really depressing. Is there such a program for someone who can complete such workout within 60 minutes? Is 60 minutes more important than yardage? Or, should I stick with it and finish it beyond 60 minutes? The program here gives out different workouts everyday; however, I do not swim with them. Whenever I finish the 50, they'd be starting. So I swim solo which I think is better. My time for 50 was 51 seconds which is really pushing it for me. I go home and row for 30 minutes on my Concept 2 PM2. I'd like to find strength/crossfit training for someone who cannot do any high impact workout. I need to save my back for endurance riding on my Arab. Is there anyone whose body is similar to mine who is also engaged in a program like mine? How do you do it? What do you do?
  • Hi - Was this a first swim after a time away from the pool, or just a day when you couldn't finish the workout? Can you resolve or improve the disk issues in some fashion? Can you add physical therapy exercises in a standing position? (A PT once suggested that to me as good for people susceptible to back problems.) Regards, VB

It sounds like you swim at about the same speed that I do. The workout that you posted is a total of 2,850 yards. That's too many yards for you (or me) to swim in an hour, especially with some kicking and drilling in there. Try a modified version of the workout, like this: ------------------------- 800 warmup (mix up swim, kick, pull, drill, etc.) 2X : 25 drill 50 work 75 (first 25 work) (50 push yourself) 100 (work middle) 200 cool down 3 X 100 200 cool down ------------------ That's a total of 2,000 yards, which is more reasonable for someone of our speed. I have a feeling that most of us are falling apart. Every time I get in the pool it feels like I am starting over from a twenty year layoff. I like to do 10 X 200s or 5 X 400s or 20 X 100s. I do my warmups during the first part of these swims. I do my cool down swims as i finish off these swims.
  • not sure if you have been out of the water for the past two years, but I have only met one masters swimming at our pool who was able to come in after 5+ yrs and make it through our workout. most people have take 3-4 weeks. it took me 2 months to get up to speed. even after a 3 week vacation it took me 2-3 practices to get back into the swing of things. I would say working through 60 minutes is the first step, then as swimming 60 minutes gets easier, you should notice you can swim longer during the same time frame.

...I feel embarrassed for not swimming faster. At one time this am, my girls' swimming coach did her warm up in the lane next to mine - just a warm up while I paddled furiously to complete 100 under 2 minutes! She swam faster than I without panting. I think that I'd cut everything by half and hope to complete within 60 minutes. VB, I've been to my PT and neurosurgeon who prescribed exercises but those exercises were ok until now. I need more core strengths just as I need more muscles elsewhere.... Is there hope for someone like myself who will be able to keep pace with my girls' swimming coach? The last time I was able to keep up with such a swimmer was 20 years ago!... Are you getting any sort of technique advice from the coach? (I'm assuming this is a coached session.) Core excercises are good, no question, but a lot of the speed part of swimming is technique, staying streamlined and slipping smoothly through the water. Relaxation is a big part of it - if you're tense and trying too hard you'll slow right down. I'm overweight and not particularly fit right now, but on rare occasions I find myself having to pass younger, much fitter people just because they are using poor technique. (If they had better technique, they'd be lapping me many times over.)

Rykno! My family used to live in your town for years before they moved to Oland. My uncle used to direct a radio program there. Such a small world! :D I've always swim slower than the others. This winter, I took a hiatus not by choice but by weather. This time around, I want to swim faster than before; thus, I realize that I need to push myself harder. I also need more muscle so I've been tip toeing around on lifting weights. After a month of swimming everyday, I still swim slower than the others. :frustrated: Jayhawk, this morning I followed the workout written on the board but I cut everything in half. For example, instead of swimming 600 warm up, I swam 300. 6 x 100 = 3 x 100, etc. I feel embarrassed for not swimming faster. At one time this am, my girls' swimming coach did her warm up in the lane next to mine - just a warm up while I paddled furiously to complete 100 under 2 minutes! She swam faster like than I without panting. I think that I'd cut everything by half and hope to complete within 60 minutes. VB, I've been to my PT and neurosurgeon who prescribed exercises but those exercises were ok until now. I need more core strengths just as I need more muscles elsewhere. I read this book, The Rider's Pain-Free Back by Dr. james Warson, MD http://drwarson.com/ and saw that his recommended strength training does not come anywhere near what I need which is to do more muscle strengthening workout so I can support my back..... Is there hope for someone like myself who will be able to keep pace with my girls' swimming coach? The last time I was able to keep up with such a swimmer was 20 years ago! :help: Thanks for your answers!!!! I appreciate it very much.
