Hi all,
MY 1st post! I'm thrilled I found this site. I hope you can help. I'm a good swimmer (12+ years of year-round competition when I was a kid), but have taken a LOT of time off. I'm 34, been back in the pool for about a year and feel great! I've been doing about 2000+/- yd workouts, some easy long sets, others short quick, little rest time. I have been staying in shape otherwise -- running, weights, yoga.
Here's my question: I'm doing a 1-mile open swim in June. I'm clueless about workouts. I've never trained for a distance like this. I can do a mile in a 25-yd pool in about 22 min -- pushing it hard. But I'd like to improve that time.
I dont' know how this translates into open water time. And I don't know how to train for this. I'd really like to be able to run, lift and yoga as well.
I'm looking for a 3 day per week program (is that enough?). I just want to get my speed up. I'm perfectly comfortable with the distance, so I'm not concerned about that.
Any ideas would be very much appreciated! Thanks so much.

Thanks again to everyone for your workout tips, wetsuit info etc. I wanted to get back to this site sooner, but it got backburnered for a while.
My husband and I did the Chesapeake Bay Miler (NOT the 4.4!). It was much much much harder than I could have ever imagined. We trained well, so we thought, including one open water swim per week to get the feel for sighting, wetsuits, etc.
It was tough getting out -- there wasn't much of a chop, water was relatively calm, but there was a tough current drawing towards the beach. I felt like I was swimming in place. I also think I swam much longer than one mile!
I finished around 35 min -- and was shocked at the time when I got to the beach, so disappointed. I thought that was SO slow. Happy and proud that we finished, etc. but still disappointed. Then I find out that I finished #117 out of about 350+. I placed 3rd in my age group. So I felt a bit better. 1st place finished around 20 min, 16-yr old! But 3rd place was a 54-yr old. LOVE swimming for that reason -- it's the great equalizer.
So, thanks to all of you -- I look forward to another open water swim, and am looking into being part of a tri relay.
Hope everyone's having a great summer!
