Back in the pool again

I swam in summer swim leagues for about 9 years. Since then I have gained some weight and want to get rid of that. I will begin Basic Law Enforcement Training in the fall and need to prepare myself for that. I will not be required to swim but I do believe that it is great for a workout and weight loss. I need a workout that can help with weight loss and get me in better shape. I would also like to begin running and doing pushups and situps(I will be doing those in my training in the fall). What can I do as a starting point?

  • hej! I started swimming again for similar reasons. I last swam in '96 and weighed just under 180lbs back then. in 2006 I was pushing 235lbs, and decided I had to start swimming again. nothing else was working for me. After 9 months I got down to 210lbs by swimming twice a week. Now I swim 3 times a week and feel great. plan on getting down to 190lb by Aug 2010. I would suggest that you find a pool with lap swimming times that fit your schedule, and try to find times when no one else is there. Don't over do it in the begining. try swimming 100 m/yds at a time, resting and stretching in between. see if you can do 4, 5 or even 10 of them with 15-20 seconds rest. after a few times of being back in the water, start looking at your times. see if you can do the same 10x100 with faster and faster start times. as your start times drop you can add a few extra 100's. I started off by swimming at lunch. 200m warm up, then 10x100m on 2:00, 100-200 warm down. The next time I tired 1:55 and so on. on or about the 6th week I was swimming 20x100m start 1:40. in the fall of 2006 i could barely swim 2500m and now I am with a Masters team that swims 4000-5500 in 90 minutes. feels great to be back in the water.
