I'm a 33yr old female with two children, 3 and 8 months. Before my second pregnancy I was trail running and I worked out during my pregnancy. However, my husband is building us a house and I basically have NO TIME to workout. I'm not completely out of shape and not overweight but.....
I swam in the Y pool the other day for the first time and was WIPED OUT after the first two laps. I plugged away for another 15 minutes but had to keep stopping after each or every other lap I was so out of breathe.
What am I doing wrong? How do you "workout" in a pool? I would like to do a triathalon in the early fall. I like to swim because its easier on your body and my knees are starting to ache after I run. Also, there is a 60 year old woman who swims at the Y and she looks GREAT, very good advertising for swimming, this woman. I would appreciate any and all comments on how to workout while swimming? Hi! and congratulations on the new family. Great that you want to get into swimming and you're right, it is the best no impact sport around.
If you're totally new to swimming, it would be wise to find an instructor who does lessons. If you have a junior college around or community pool they ususally offer semi-private lessons or swim classes. I'd suggest taking a few private lessons or a swim class because most beginners need a little extra attention in the beginning. One you get the basics, then you can find a masters program and start swimming with the big fish.
There are also lots of learn-to-swim videos etc on the market, but they are no substitute for a qualified swim instructor.

Thanks. That is just about my level. If I basically do not kick, I can get to the end of the pool without panting. So there's a lot of work ahead of me!

Just a guess but you did not say that you are a former swimmer so I would guess you have pretty lousy form. An excompetitive swimmer can swim a length even very out of shape at age 33 and not be out of breath. So my advice would be take some swim lessons it will make swimming a whole lot more fun in the long run.
