Some pretty interesting discussions going on at www.collegeswimming.com, since I'm on the kick only routine after shoulder surgery thought these we're pretty interesting!
Obscure records.
As usual, I am having another heated discussion with another former swimmer. He said that he knew a swimmer that could kick 200 yards flutter kick in 1 minute 55 seconds. I could barely swim that fast, but I swam 400 years ago.
I told him he was full of "hot air", but then again, I could be wrong. So, here we go again.
Are there any unofficial records for kicking? For conversation sake, let's divide it up into men and women, long course or short course, all four "strokes" and 100 yards or 100 meters.
Don't "BS", I'm curious how fast the super swimmers can actually kick.
I'll anxiously await the results.
Thanks,
Your pal in aquatics, SB

fastest times i remember hearing of or seeing with my own eyes.....
(all guys)
SCY
100 *** kick in 1:08.1
200 *** in 2:20
avg. 1:16.1 for 2000 straight ***
kick 100 back in 51.4 SCY
19.9 for a 50 kick with fins on (no board)
55.5 for 100 free kick SCY
I heard Peter Marshall did a 2000 Back kick in something crazy like 22 minutes
LCM
100 *** 1:20.8
I read somewhere that thorpe can go 2:15 for 200 LCM free kick
I'm not sure what the fastest 200 free kick i've seen is, but 1:55 sounds pretty insane. I might call BS on that one.....

I saw Peter Marshall kick 8x100 on 1:30 going between 51.6-56.4. I do remmeber hearing about some national swimmers being able to go sub 2:00 200 kicks with and with out kick boards.

I saw Gary Hall kick 100 meter long course (on a kickboard) Butterfly in 1:03 or maybe 1:05.
That was 1975 - So it was the man now known as Gary Hall, SR.
Somebody who knows Eddie Reese should ask him about fast kicking, rumor is Neil Walker was amazing.

I have a friend on the Stanford swim team who told me about Hongzhe Sun doing a 100 backstroke kick in 49 seconds.
I've always been fascinated watching really slow swimming who have good form. In high school, my coach was Mr. Fish. He would get into the pool and swim so slowly that I could never figure out how he stayed afloat. I've always wondered if there are records of really slow swims - the slowest 50 meters. the person woudl still have to be actually swimmign for the record to count.
I used to race the sprint swimmers that would swim 50 yards front crawl in 23.5 sec I would do 50 yards dolphin kick and beat them. I am sure they can kick dolphin kick faster nowadays.
Nice thing about Counsilman, he recorded everything.
Tom Tretheway-Leg domination
50 yards kick 32.8
50 meters 38
100 yards 1:11.6
200 yards 2:35
200 meters 2:56
Chester Jastremski - Arm domination
50 yards kick 37
50 meters 39.7
100 yards 1:19
200 yards 2:51
200 meters 3:17
Ten years ago when I was only 47, I could kick 200 meters short course in 2:55. Leg domination; my best 200 scm as a masters was only 2:46
I would think for $5000 a college breaststroker could kick close to a minute from a racing start. Add three seconds for a water start.
I remember Diane Granners brother (a 43 second freestyler) coaching one of his first masters workouts. He said, do ten 100 kicks on a minute:D :D :D We were like " what drug are you on?"
Then he remembered he wasn't at UCLA anymore.
100 backstroke kick in 49s?? Aaron Peirsol did a 53.17 and that's the current WR!! Even the WR for 100 free that vd Hoogenband holds is 47.84! Or are you talking about 100 yards backstroke kick :D? Even that is FREEEKIN unbelievable!
Here's a link to a non-scoring meet Texas had with USC last weekend where they did off events like the 150 free and so on. McGinnis is fast yet I'm sure Crocker or Josh Davis when he was in his prime could have gone under 1:10 in the 150.

I'd love to see 400 of each stroke at some point.
As far as kicking...I've heard from folks that Larsen Jensen can kick 10 x 100 meters on the 1:20. Though I'm removed from Texas now, Eddie has a sophomore now Daniel Rohleder than can kick 50's on the :35.
OK here's a link to the non scoring meet on Saturday, lots of 150's, 300's, and 600's. Mellouoi went a 6:00.83 600 IM.

I used to be a super fast kicker. I was about 1:05/1:06 in free and fly kick for 100 yards. I remember *easily* being able to do 10x50 kick on :45 during a workout after not having been swimming at all for 4 1/2 years. Sometimes I wonder what the heck my arms were doing since my times for 100 free were :58 (maybe I once went :57--it is all so long ago!) and fly 1:02. I was *way* faster at kicking than anyone on my team. Once a swimmer who was a bit older than me who made Olympic trials the year before came to train with us and I beat him badly, too. He was really upset by this, threw his goggles, got out of the pool, put on fins and screamed at me, "try to beat me now, b**ch!" LOL!
Once, though, I swam in a lane at a camp next to Tracey Caulkins and I was swimming free and she went *right* by me *pulling* breastroke! lol So, being a fast kicker isn't all its cracked up to be. ;)
fast kicking helps
next you have to figure out how to apply when you're swimming

Back when I was in college we did a double distance dual against Michigan. The meet was done outdoors long course meters. This was probably around early November, so I actually remember the cold more than the length of the swims! Anyway, Mike Barrowman swam the 400 *** and set a new world record. Somewhere he found some old reference and WRs were actually kept in 400s of strokes. I think he beat the old mark pretty convincingly since it was probably 50 years old or so :)
