Advice for a Wannabe

I'm a "swimmer" (I can get to the side of the pool, had red cross junior lifesaver years ago, stuff like that) but I've really never swam laps or cared about the efficiency or speed of my stroke. I'm considering taking up "fitness swimming" to balance my running habit and maybe get me into a triathlon down the line someplace. So... How do I start? Can you suggest a good book? Should I go find a place to take a lesson? Should I just start swimming laps and see what happens? Will I have my Bermuda shorts laughed at, be "run over" by other swimmers, and be left coughing at the side of the pool with chlorine burnt eyes?

  • Best advice: find a masters team that has different lanes tailored to different speeds/abilities. Then take the plunge and join in. probably starting out in the slowest lane. Give yourself three months then reevaluate. Odds are you will be in the best swimming shape of your life. And thoroughly enjoying swimming at this point. Oh, and get some goggles and maybe a pair of jammers.
