Training for open water...

I'm sure that this has been discussed ad nauseum but I wanted some quick advice. I've registered for my first open water swim (1 mi.), and I am now wondering: Now what?? I've been doing pool swimming off and on for the better part of 5 years, 3-4 x a week, with daily yardage between 1500-3000m. How do I train for an open water swim? Would a master's programme help me, do you think?? Any replies GREATLY appreciated!! peace...

Sounds like you are already doing a good amount of yardage. Try to concentrate on longer swims, like repeating 500s or a 1000. Once a week I do a 1650, trying to maintain my desired pace. The next step is to get out in the open water. Do it with friends as a group. Wear a wet suit if needed. Start slowly and safely, try to follow bouys, you can always hang on one to rest if needed. And remember that you have to return the same distance you went out.

Many thanks for the tips- I'm fortunate that I live close to the sea (.5mi) so the open water is very accessible... I just hope that I don't have a run-in with a shark (which, actually, does worry me :( ) peace...
