Increasing Indurance greatly!

I haven't been swimming in about 2 or 3 years. Now, i'm wanting to start life guard training. (First of a few courses) Right now, i'm guessing i couldn't do much more than 400meters :( Is there any suggestions to increase my indurance? I probably won't be able to get to the pool to often so other exercises would be neccesary. I'm guessing the endurance would be between either 875 meters or 1400 or 1500. Is this possible? Any specific suggestions to do ? Any help would be appreciated! Thank You ! :)

If you are taking lifeguard training through the Red Cross the first day is a 500 yd/meter swim and a treading water ( I'm not sure how many minutes of that). I was 40 years old, 50 pounds overweight and recovering from a hamstring tear and I did it so- can you. You do have to know a variey of strokes and kicks not just freestyle. You'll need elementary backstroke kick and sidestroke kick.
