I am on a weight loss program, with a 46lb loss already. I have been exercising but would like to incorporate swimming into my routine as well. I have always enjoyed swimming and would eventually like to compete. Does anyone have any suggestions on where do start....I have been participating wkly in a water aerobics class but would like to incorporate lap swimming. Thanks for your help.

I too have been in your place. I have lost 75lbs. in about a year and a half with swimming being my main exercise. If you have never been a lap swimmer before I would recommend getting with your local club or others who swim. It really helps to have someone else to workout with. I swim mostly on my own and know that some days I could easily skip. Start out slowly and build to a good workout. The first week that I went back to swimming I only swam 500 - 1000 yd a day. It took about a month to build to where I could easily do a workout of 3000 - 5000yd. The workouts posted on this site are great and keep things interesting. If you want to compete, having a coach and group to work out with is by far the best. They keep you motivated, help with technique, etc. Keep up the hard work and good luck with your goals. Keep on swimming!! Lee Anne:cool:

Congrats on your weight loss - that's fantastic and you should feel proud. As to the swimming, just get into the pool and do it. You might only be able to do 50 or 100 yards at at the beginning, but that's a start. You will find yourself going longer and longer with less effort as the days pass. When you can do, let's say, 1000 yards or so easily, you might want to think about doing some interval workouts (I think somebody asked a question about interval training somewhere on this forum). If you want to compete, you will definitely want to do some interval training. But for now, just get in there and swim some laps. Good luck to you. Given your start, I am sure you will do well.
