1,000.00 fee for swimming with a USMS team?

Q: I'm changing my location and wanted to join a local USMS team at the YMCA where I'm already member and swim there. THis was exciting! Until I tried to join. I was told that the fee for joining the Master's team at the YMCA is $1,000.00. I've belonged to two or three different USMS teams over the past decades and never have I been charged a fee like that! When I asked about it I was told by the person at the Y that this was 'normal'.

Is this a normal fee?

  • My USMS club charges over $1000 per year for 8 coached practices/week. But there are also options to pay monthly or a daily fee.

It sounds like you can only attend really 2 of the practices that they offer with that fee because those are at your facility and that is definitely a steep price. I would inquire about monthly pricing or about a price for just your location.

Or could you maybe get in touch with the coach directly to inquire about different pricing models? My experience with masters programs is that admin sometimes is less flexible than the coaches on deck. Because the coaches on deck usually want more swimmers in the water and want to find a way that you can join their group.
