1,000.00 fee for swimming with a USMS team?

Q: I'm changing my location and wanted to join a local USMS team at the YMCA where I'm already member and swim there. THis was exciting! Until I tried to join. I was told that the fee for joining the Master's team at the YMCA is $1,000.00. I've belonged to two or three different USMS teams over the past decades and never have I been charged a fee like that! When I asked about it I was told by the person at the Y that this was 'normal'.

Is this a normal fee?

  • Is that the fee for the year?  The Y where I swim discontinued their Masters program during COVID and never started it up again, but pre-COVID we paid $300 for the year on top of our regular monthly membership fees. Our local Masters program now runs out of a different facility and charges $100 a month for 5 coached practices a week.

  • Thank you.  Yes, the fee for the year, plus monthly membership to Y, which can run over 100 a month.  7 practice times but spread across 5 different Y's in very different places in the city, non-convenient. No one Y has more than 2 a week, and oddly spaced. My Y's days are Saturday and Sunday 6AM. This is a new Masters and I don't think they are USMS affiliated. It will be interesting to see who/how many they recruit.
