Butterfly, beautiful to watch, difficult to train.
We SDK off every wall.
We're most likely to smack hands with each other and those beside us.
Fly's fun to sprint but no fun when the piano comes down
What did you do in practice today?

The Middle Distance Lane

Have you guys seen our buterfly series swimisodes starting with this one: www.theraceclub.com/.../
Starring the great Lars Frolander - such a beautiful butterfly! and check out Mike Cavic is some videos too...
That's a great video series! Can anyone suggest a good drill that will help me eliminate the pause at the beginning of my pull?
Try using a tempo trainer and keeping up with the beep. A good pace for a 50 butterfly, depends on each swimmer but is generally around 50 strokes per minute.
Couple questions for the butterfly lane...where should my hands be when I breath?
Also, on occasion I feel as though I am lifting too much water on my back/upper shoulders?
Am I coming up too early to breath and/or possibly going too deep? Thanks!
We have your descriptions of your butterly, we want to actually see it.
Have someone film you swimming butterfly and showing how you breathe
preferably from a side angle, well lit, fairly close to show details,
then post the video on youtube,
then provide the link here and ask folks to watch and offer feedback

This may sound strange but focus on the last part of your pull and exit, that will cary the momentum forward, If you slow down at the end of your stoke and exit slowly your body starts to sink making it harder to grab and go on the front end. I had the same problem and worked on it during races this weekend. first event 500 fly, then 50 fly, then 200 fly, 100 fly, 200 fly again during 200 free My second 200 fly was faster then my first one. I am sure that it was because I was focusing on the last part of my stroke and the exit.. (and getting my head down quickly) Try this and let me know how it works, After your warm up swim 4 x 100 fly with a 30 second rest, swim normal for the first two, then do what I suggested...
Butterfly is Not a Crime..
I'm Happy to be swimming the 1650 fly this Friday at the Colonial Zones.
My workout for the past month below... make sure to swim one 1650 fly each week. watch the clock. focus on pace and turns.
All turns focus on bringing feet to wall fast and look like a pencil with a tight stream line off all walls.
Warm up with 1,000 free moderate pace focusing on getting distance off the walls on each turn with butterfly kick.
8 x 50 fly race pace plus 15 focus on swimming the pace you want for a 1650.
2 x 500 fly with the second one being faster then the first.
EZ 100 free between as active rest.
EZ 100
3 x 100 at race pace for 1650 plus 30 seconds descend times for each hundred
focus on quick release at the end of the stroke and getting head down quick.
EZ 100
Finish workout freestyle..
Does anyone know of anyone that has escaped from Alcatraz swimming butterfly without a wetsuit?
I am training to escape from Alcatraz swimming Butterfly as a Fund Raiser for Special Olympics.
www.swimflyfast.com/special-olympics
During the past year I have 'found' the pace I can sustain until I get hungry or need to go home.
swimming a mile and a half straight now is beginning to be easy.
Since Alcatraz is a mile an a half I feel it is necessary to go that distance in practice and maybe a little more.
Rather then think about counting laps I pace myself to go the same speed (around 50 seconds per fifty and check that out every third 50 ) That way I can just look at the starting and ending time on the clock instead of dealing with the mental anguish of trying to count to 99...
Lately I have been working the middle of the swim faster and I am trying to build speed from the middle instead of the start and holding on. This helps me relax during the first 500 yards and not feel the pressure at the end.
Does anyone know of anyone who swam from Alcatraz without a wet suit? I see some that have with a wet suit.
