Butterfly, beautiful to watch, difficult to train.
We SDK off every wall.
We're most likely to smack hands with each other and those beside us.
Fly's fun to sprint but no fun when the piano comes down
What did you do in practice today?

:bliss:WooHOOO! The problem was on the administrative end according to Jim:
"It should be all cleared up now. We had different issues with various browsers after an update to the forums software. I finally went back in today and re-did the forums update from scratch and all seems to be working in all browsers now. If you still see any problems, try reloading the page. If that doesn't work, you may need to clear your browser cache/history (I had to do that to get Internet Explorer to work again)."
Thanks for clearing up the problem, Jim, and thanks for giving me back my blue Comic Sans and Smilies! :ohyeah:
YES, THIS IS MUCH BETTERi1185.photobucket.com/.../huge-dancing-banana.gif
I'm working on improving my very pokey 200 fly speed. My best short course yards time is 3:50, and my recent long course time was 4:37; however, I "raced" it immediately following my 400 free race.
Today, in a 25 yard pool following a practice 200 breaststroke race, I swam the following set:
4x50 fly @ 1:30, 1:15, 1:00 . My times were :53, :53, :55, :54 .
Based on all of the above information, what do you think a reasonable goal should be for:
1. Practice 200 fly races? These would be from a push off, since the pool I train in doesn't have starting blocks.
2. My long course time for Worlds and Nationals?
As a side note, I'm a breaststroker, and this is not a core race for me (as you can tell by my very pokey times!). I love racing this event, though, and my goal is to improve!
Thanks!

disclaimer: I am NOT a butterflyer, I do, however, enjoy time calculations and estimates.
Given that you know how to do mega-distance fly, although you may be "pokey" (or so you say) you can probably sustain what speed you have pretty well. You were basically holding :55/50 on the 4x50 set with decreasing intervals. I'd guess that you can get quite close to sustaining that given proper motivation. That's a 3:40 add-up, which I note is not too far from your pr 3:50.
The descending intervals give you extra recover in the first repeats though. For a better estimate, I suggest that you do 4x50 SCY fly on 1:05. (Yes, this will be uncomfortable. I've done it. I know.) Your add up should be a reasonable estimate of your 200 SCY fly time. Using this time and an SCY-LCM converter you can get an estimate for your 200 LCM fly.
I also suggest that you time trail a 225 SCY fly in practice. This will probably be a faster than your 200 LCM fly time, but in the same ballpark. Check out this thread for some discussion of this idea.

Compare these two estimates.

Excellent, Karl! I appreciate your advice and suggestions, and it gives me a framework to work with between now and August. :applaud:
Thank you very much! :agree:
I swim lots of 25s, 50s and 75s ... not a ton of long reps for Fly training.
Last fly session I had 2 main sets
16x25 @ 30 hold 15
4 x 75 @2.15 holding 49-50
SCM pool...
I also like 8 to 10 x 50 @90 sec hold 32 or better.
I think you should start to swim right before you lose speed on your sdk. For me, it is three kicks and go. My SDK is not good enough for more. I tested it with 25 sprints, doing 3 and 4 kicks, and when I do four, I am typically .25 to .5 slower, which is a lot.
I am wondering what is a good strategy for 100 fly SCY in terms of number of underwater dolphin kicks off of the walls? I currently to 3 once I feel my glide from push off slowing. A fellow swimmer thinks a higher number is better. Thoughts?

There is no good number for everyone. It depends on how good your SDK is ,how much you practice SDK,and how good your breath control is.If you have a lousy SDK and have practiced it enough to know that it is not likely to improve, then 2-3 is a good number. If your SDK is faster than your surface swimming, then you want to get as close to the 15M mark as possible underwater,or at least as far as you can without the O2 debt compromising your swimming. The only way to know what is best for you is practice at race pace getting times with each number of kicks.Even then,if you practice doing SDKs and get better, then you will be able to do more and go faster.
