The Butterfly Lane

Butterfly, beautiful to watch, difficult to train. We SDK off every wall. We're most likely to smack hands with each other and those beside us. Fly's fun to sprint but no fun when the piano comes down What did you do in practice today? the breastroke lane The Middle Distance Lane The Backstroke Lane The Butterfly Lane The SDK Lane The Taper Lane The Distance Lane The IM Lane The Sprint Free Lane The Pool Deck
  • One intriguing thing about the event order at Auburn -- I'm sure you've noticed -- they put all the "Brute Squad" events on the first day. I'm probably not going to do it this year, but next year Auburn will be the last meet in my current age group, so I'm thinking about doing them all on the same day (as well as other totally insane things like maybe even a breaststroke event!) Last year, one of the guys on my team did everything 200 yds and up... and he won them all in his age group. I'm weighing the 400 IM vs. the 1650 right now. I'll probably have less competition in the 1650 and I can rest up for the IM relay. Don't see any problem with breaststroke events. I'll be doing all three. My 200 br was actually a couple seconds faster than my 200 fly last year.
  • My 200 br was actually a couple seconds faster than my 200 fly last year. I wish I could do that!! :)
  • I am totally OCD about counting strokes. The stroke count determines the breath count, and when you're talking about only 6 or 7 breaths per length, it matters. (I run out of air pretty easily in a 200 fly.) Oh I was counting. I'm always counting. Remembering later what I counted is something else entirely.
  • Oh I was counting. I'm always counting. Remembering later what I counted is something else entirely. That's why you're my #1 counter for distance races. I have a hard enough time counting lengths, much less strokes per length!

  • hey all...would love to get comments on my fly video (hopefully posted below). This is from this past summer and I've been really trying to work on soft hand entry and not bending knees so much and keeping the kick more underwater - but I'm not improving too much. Would love any feedback ect. will try to get some current video soon... http://youtu.be/ir1bBwjAYa8 Hey, John, I am NO expert in fly (Just check out my fly video and you will see why...), but there is something I notice immediately: Your timing. Check out some YouTube videos of the pros and compare your timing to theirs; you will see a difference. At this point, I will defer to Ande and the other USMS experts on how to improve your stroke...:bolt: Meanwhile, good luck! :cheerleader: Post a new video soon, so we can see how your stroke is coming along.

  • Thanks Elaine! What I'm having trouble with is figuring out where the timing is off...and how to fix it. I think it's off from a pause in the front but I'm not sure...I have trouble getting the pull initiated sooner...can you tell where my timing is off?? It seems like your second kick (when you recover your arms) is delayed, so that your down kick happens too close to when your arms re-enter the water. Ande, is this correct? Check out this video for comparison: http://youtu.be/qI8i3_7Tqtw Edit: John, I have watched your video several times and I'm trying to figure it out... Perhaps it's the too-bent knees, especially on that second kick, that makes it appear to me that the timing is off; like they are occuring too close together. And, the too-bent knees are causing your hips to drop and ride too low in the water. Hey, flyers, help me out here. Am I on the right track?
  • I just did a 2:20.40 for my SCM 200 Fly today in Bend, Oregon (at 3800 ft. of elevation). 4 second drop and I'm very happy. The swimming world time converter tool says this is a 2:05.80 in SCY. 12-10-11 200 SCM Fly - Bend, Oregon - YouTube
