Butterfly, beautiful to watch, difficult to train.
We SDK off every wall.
We're most likely to smack hands with each other and those beside us.
Fly's fun to sprint but no fun when the piano comes down

By end January I will hopefully be able to sail through a 100m - but be looking forward to a 200m ( if that is possible?) - and not have a 200 fly race hanging over my head like the sword of damocles .....
Be careful...once you've done the 200 fly, you may find you have an inexplicable urge to swim a 400IM :afraid:
I actually did the same exact thing as That GUy (we were next to each other). I did mine out of pure exhaustion going into the race though, knowing I wouldn't be able to "take it out" like I usually do. It was the easiest 200 Fly I'd ever done, and I made a run for it at the end, and almost caught That Guy too! :) We both ended up having best times in the race.
Maybe this means I should change my approach at the 200 Fly???
NO WAY!!! Out like a rabbit is how I will be! :bliss:  :bliss:
I didn't actually get a best time. If I had sprinted with 75 to go like I planned, then I might have. But like I said, it worked out fine.

Then the next thing you know, you'll be entering the Brute Squad Postal swim: www.damfast.org/.../2011brutemeetsheet.pdf

That is the same, but "different" at the same time. Slightly more open rules than the other. I've done this one the past 3 years, and used my swims for the past meet for this year's entry. :)
Do lots of fly in practice. Swim 200s (or 225yds) kick and drill, keep it steady and get used to swimming fly-something for that long.
I gradually built up my fly distance over 3 months, so the first couple of weeks my workouts included 2 lots of 4 x 50 fly, on 1.15 I think. Then I went up to 4 x 75s on 1.45 or similar, until I finally managed 3 x 175. After that I was in the LCM pool, so jumped to a full 200 LCM - OUCH!!
So you have what 10 weeks? As our friend Stephen Covey says "Begin with the end in mind".
You need to complete 225 yards/200m full stroke fly by the end of Jan. You can already do 4 lengths, so this week work on 5 lengths, then every 2 weeks add on another length to your sets and you'll be there easily :D
I really must get off my (rather large) bottom for this big local meet in January - having pondered on I will enter for the 100m fly but start to train now for the 200m as suggested

I'm confused... why are there two? Are they both USMS sanctioned events?

The one in Colorado is not a USMS sanctioned one (but it is recognized). The times won't count for TT unless you are using results from a meet. Those times are already submitted from the meet anyway.
I believe the bolded line is true for any postal event, even the DAM event. Any time submitted for top ten must occur in an official sanctioned or recognized event where all the appropriate rules are followed. DAM has no ability to verify that when you swam the brute squad events at your local pool, you had the appropriate starter and judge, the pool was measured, etc. Therefore, those results can not be submitted for top ten from DAM. If you did swim these events in a local sanctioned/recognized meet and submitted those times to DAM for the brute squad postal, then your times should be submitted by your local top ten recorder.
If I've got this wrong, I'm sure Chris Stevenson will weigh in.
This is exactly what I did this year. I swam the 3 events in the WHidbey Island SCM meet last weekend...really (not) fun too!! :cheerleader: The prior two years, we would just swim the events in a practice, and those would not count for anything TT related, only the Brute Squad itself.

Except the Pac Masters Brute Squad version of the event seems to be sanctioned (sanction number is given as 38-11-18). I'm not sure how that happened since it doesn't seem to meet the "minimum personnel" requirement of sanction.

Or am I missing something?
Also it appears that only a single stopwatch is needed, and that is not enough for Top Ten eligibility.
