Butterfly, beautiful to watch, difficult to train.
We SDK off every wall.
We're most likely to smack hands with each other and those beside us.
Fly's fun to sprint but no fun when the piano comes down

Wow. 5 strokes up and 8 back. I think I could do this, but I wonder what it would do to my time. I'll try it tonight.
By the way, I see most guys in USMS championship heats my age doing way less than 12 sdk's, and taking it out in 8-9 and back in 9-10 strokes.

I don't have any videos of my 50 fly races but it's possible that I do take more strokes when I race the 50. Those stroke counts stick out in my mind because that's how I'm likely to start a 100 or 200, which I race far more often. Also, the guys in that floswimming video are all faster than me at the 50 fly so you should pay more attention to them! :cane: I can hit Bowman's target of 10 difference between stroke count and time in practice though.
You are right about this. I do count my strokes--9 up and 12 back, which, I believe is correct for my time 31sec SCM. I also count them as well as my sdk in practice.
I just checked my heat of 100yd fly from Clovis nationals, the 40-44 age group.

I took about 10 SDKs of all walls and did 5/7/7/7 strokes. I was going pretty much full out the first 50 so I think the stroke count would be the same. Add one more stroke per lap for SCM.
I counted strokes for some of the rest of the heat (Shaffer, Varozza, Hochstein) who don't kick as much off the walls, they mostly did 6/8/8/8 strokes. Again, add 1 stroke for SCM and you get 7/9 for a 50. They are all, of course, very good butterflyers.

Yes, those counts are what I come up with also. But you guys are all much faster than me (by about 4 seconds in a 50), and my counts are, therefore, higher.
I wonder what your thoughts are about Bowman's remarks regarding stroke count as it relates to time. That is, the stroke count should be 10 less than the time(in seconds) in a 50. And why is this relationship that important?
Is there a distance limit on the start (from blocks). In other words, how far can I legally go underwater before starting my stroke?
15 meters...same as always. :) Your head needs to break the surface by this point. You could continue just kicking if you wanted to on the surface, but full stroke swimming is faster at this point.
I realized that the mere existance of the 50 fly event has renewed my love for this stroke. Only about the last 40 yards of my race need work.
Hooray for 50 fly :applaud:
It's a fun event, especially in LCM. I'm swimming it in a couple weeks! :bliss:

Me too!! I wimped out and did an "email change" of my 400 Free to the 50 Fly instead. :) Duel in the Pool...again. I don't think I'll swim much in the next two weeks, but it's a 50, and anyone can do a 50.

I just swam my first 50 LCM fly about 3 weeks ago. I think I took about 5 strokes inside the flags at the end haha. Still went 28.4 :applaud:
It still needs work though. Its easy to cruise fast in fly, but sprinting fly always feels like I'm thrashing more than I should. Just need more exposure to this event and it'll come down a bunch.
