TEST THEM SUITS for real !!

So - I almost did my PR in 100 Free at age 41 in 2009 - so I know the suits are 'good'  - but how much faster are those current suits - tried to find info - and I couldn't - only research seemed to have been from large suits. So - I am gonna test it !! 25s - sorry can't do 50s yet in all out repeats that allow comparison.

Another reason(s) for me to test is 1) I can't do underwater ...yet ...so suits may work more for underwater swimmers 2) not happy but I got a lot more lose skin than a 20 year old... does that make a difference 3)  I am a numbers guy ... its a project, I will enjoy it and so on...

First judgement on expensive Speedo suit - its way way tooooo tight !! I checked the size and measure 5 times, it took me 3 attempts to get it on - I could not bend properly and blood supply seemed limited - I took it off 30 min ago and my hip / leg area is still not happy ... either I got the size totally wrong or its just silly tight and I would never be able to swim in this fast...

Right now my test sample is 4x25 on 6-8 minutes interval --- 3 days --- One day with reg suit to see if there is a decline / Day 2 Using suit on 2nd and 3rd 25 only / Day 3 using suit on 1st and 4th 25 only .... not sure yet I can do 3 days in a row - my sprints do make me tired.

Any feedback or better ideas ??

  • I think the expensive, compression suits are probably faster. I feel faster in one, but that may be placebo effect. I am very interested in the results of your test. I don’t see how you can do day three easily because it involves putting the suit on taking it off and putting it on again. They should take at least five minutes to put on and10 is more likely and that’s dry, putting it on wet is going to take much longer. Also doing sprints I think you might want to allow a days rest between each session to make sure you truly have recovered .

  • OK - first test - not "selling suits" - I would rather save the $$ - used a way too expensive Arena suit: Have to use videos to get the times - only way to get times if you coach yourself - just using phone to video 25s - which is also a bit challenging but I know the times and all. NO diving ... finding a pool where they allow lap swimming to dive is more difficult than swimming my hardest set right now Slight smile

Last week - 2x25 - 5 min rest - and second 25 was .07 slower - I have NOT gone faster in my second 25 since I have checked times this year.

Yesterday - first 25 practice suit // Second 25 in Arena tech suit about 8 min later was 0.25 FASTER  /  3rd 25 also in tech suit 0.2 faster than practice suit.

Overall my first 25 was a little slower than last week - but was not a great session overall / warm up and all. Another thing which makes it difficult to really compare - putting on the suit... takes time and effort and all.

So - yes - the suits made me faster - I think my other thing to share, I did not want to swim long in the suit after - literally only did a 25 after the first tech suit sprint to get it dry and all - but just swimming that easy 25 when you can feel the water better than when sprinting - felt like i was "floating" ....

  • Very interesting and very good information thank you
