Sidestroke kick

I'm a novice swimmer. My swim instructor is also a USMS coach. For the sidestroke kick she has me moving the forward leg forward straight, not bent at the knee. The backward leg is bent at the knee. Has anyone heard of this style? I don't see anyone doing this.

    if i remember correctly Roy Saari did this type of kick on his freestyle. you'll need to use the "way back machine"  to find any info on him !
