After prolonged layoff, re-swimming--discussion on common issues with gaining form

I restarted a couple of months ago after several months and minimal swimming.  My times are off, but besides overall fitness and 'feel for the water' I wondered what others thought were issues they had to work on to resuming swimming and re-gaining form?  This would hopefully help us focus on parts that would quickly help us re-gain form.  Focus for me is free (limited pool time), I feel like my fitness is back as well as being pre-pandemic weight, but my times are still off 3-4 secs/100.  Thanks

  • As Allen said above, it is instant feedback.  And it also tells you when you are done, meaning you are swimming improperly.  I have different stroke counts for different distances, and it is very helpful in making sure I focus on things to be sure I'm not picking up bad habits as I tire.

  • What about doing some underwater dolphin kick work with fins? That should take stress off the shoulder while still doing some higher intensity work.

  • I was off for about 7 months last year do to COVID, an ankle surgery, and health issues with the heart. Anyways, I got back into the swimming and was doing times in workouts similar to 2018. I going to have to take off a week do to a biopsy.

  • Yes  that is a good idea and have used it to help. Thanx for the idea.

  • Probably, after reading the Tera Brahram book I think that swimming particularity for masters swimmers is exercise. She was a top age grouper that had a shoulder injury at age 12 and after that the best she could do was just missing the Olympic trials cuts. In fact she once beat Maya Derido as a 10 year old. This book gave me a better perspective since I can't even do 10,000 a week in practice like some other masters swimmers do. Tera Brahram had 3 surgeries from her swimming injury at age 12. Just do what you are able to do. As mention I do all 4 strokes since I can't do high yardage volume.

  • You’re welcome!

  • I just looked at psych times for nationals this year and I would have been in contention for 5 medals in 6 events.  Next year will be better WITHOT any surgeries!!!

  • Stay healthy!

  • My swim buddies did talk me into swimming the Senior games meet in Iowa. I was tried and way SLOW but, finished my events.
