Use of fins in workouts

I'm new to this site and joined USMS last week. It's been >30 years since I last competed. I've used the site to look at sample workouts. My question is: Why do most workouts include sets using fins? I assume you could do more distance in shorter times, but not sure what the benefit is. Can anyone give me some insight?

  • What Steve said ^^^. Plus, I like to use them on occasion when I've been working my arms/shoulders a lot and want to focus more on legs. It takes some of the strain off the shoulders while you still can get speed.
