Just saw this for the first time, do not know how old the report is.The swim was August 2016.
One note - Elaine Howley from the USMS national office, while not at this swim is a certified Ice Miler (not just 1K like in the story). Elaine’s swam her ice mile in December 2012 in Boston Harbor at 5C.
Phil runs some very cold water swims, not yet an ice mile though plenty of ice, in Lake Memphremagog, March 3-5, 2017:

SwimDogs, that's a nice recall of one of my favorite places to swim - Glacier National Park's 10-mile lakes.
Funny story: I was in the old visitors center one February Day, air temp zero degrees, when 3 young women walked in to warm up. Apparently they had been skiing on Lake McDonald, fell in, self-rescued, walked down the road to the visitors center, and took it all pretty well, regretting only that they had lost their skis.
If anyone's interested, I created a short (8-mins) film about my Winter & Ice Swimming experiences which includes some footage from Lake Memphremagog, the "Dark & Cold" Scandinavian Winter Swimming Championships, and the Coney Island Polar Bear Club.
The winter swimming community is made up of wonderful, crazy people...or WONDERFULLY CRAZY!

When I read the title of this thread I thought it must be a joke. Ice swimming in Lesotho? Lesotho is a country that's entirely surrounded by South Africa, right? So I looked it up and learned an interesting fact: Lesotho is the world's highest country by minimum elevation. The entire country is above 1,000 meters elevation, the lowest point being 1,400 m (4,593 ft) above sea level.
