Hello,
I am a new USMS member. I joined because I signed up for an upcoming 5 mile race in the open water in Maryland. Does anyone have tips for a newbie to open water races? My endurance is pretty good, but I hired a personal trainer to try and lose some pounds doing dryland workouts, as well as running, even though I hate running with a passion.
Thanks for any help/advice!
Nick, when is the event? If it's later in the summer, you'd do well to increase your long swims each week (do it once/week) by about 3-500yds at most each week. Increase your long swim yardage 3 weeks in a row, then have an easier day. Try to get in the pool at least 4-5 times a week if you can. And I've learned through the years, stretch, stretch, stretch every night or you'll get stiff.
Message me your email through this site and I can send you a training spreadsheet I've used in the past to build yardage.
