millions of tiny jellyfish invade the Atlantic beaches

I had a great time last week at Ocean City Maryland swimming along the shore. The lifeguards were very understanding about letting me swim out beyond the breakers even when the sea was rough and they were telling swimmers to stay shallow. But the last day, there were clouds of tiny jellyfish, living and dead. The dead ones were smelly and gross. Swimming through the live ones felt like getting pinpricks all over my body. There were handfuls of them caught in my suit after I got out. I hope this goes away before the July 18 3 mile Ocean Games race! I've been swimming at that beach since I was 6 and have never seen this before. What is going on? Don't know if I can swim 3 miles in that.
