I am looking to hook up with open water swimmers on Anna Maria Island, Florida. Interested in doing training swims together, and maybe occasional social events.

you might have some luck with a triathlon website or local triathlon club. in addition, if you have a beach or site in mind, you might stalk the site for swimmers.
I live in the greater houston area... regardless of the metropolitan area, you're likely to have to turn a few stones and rocks over to locate some open water swim partners.
