Last year there were comments about the scheduling conflict between CYL-Sitka and Pennock Island-Ketchikan. Decisions about tides played a role for both these events. At the Change Your Latitude-57* North event, the course passes over shallows to the inside of the breakwater. A minimal tide is required to keep your keel clear of the invertebrate infested bottom. Equally important for CYL, is tying into the Sitka Seafood Festival weekend--which was a tremendous hit with traveling participants in 2012.
For the truely ambitious, (nutso perhaps?) it is possible to do both Southeast Alaska events this year in one weekend. If you either swim the 10K very fast, or play it safe and go for the 5K, from Sitka you will be able to catch the 12:00 flight to Ketchican shortly after your race. The CYL course runs along the north side of Japonski Island, onwhich is located the Sitka airport and US Coast Guard air station.
Online registration is open and live on the Change Your Latitude website or HERE
Remember there are only 50 spots available at this time for solo 5K and 10K swimmers. Kayaker matches are also limited on a first come first served basis. The first 3 spots were filled in the opening 24hrs! Sign up today!
