I am getting a team together for a 4 -person MIMS (Manhattan Island Marathon) relay next August. I have one person so far, and will need others. Applications are probably due in late November, but will need to have everything lined up well in advance.
Please let me know if you are interested.
More detailed information on the event itself is here: nycswim.org/.../Event.aspx
It is about 28 miles around Manhattan Island, and each person swims for 40-45 minutes and then the next swimmer takes over and so on. The whole thing takes about 8-9 hours but with a 4 person relay it only comes out to around 4 shifts per person (as opposed to a 6 person relay which is less time in the water). I was a boat monitor on the relay course this year and have seen how challenging this can be, especially with currents (not always at your back) and time limits. I have one local person so far, but will need others to fill out the team (and possibly an alternate). I live in northern NJ and am just a short drive to NYC, but you may need to arrange for transportation and lodging. We would also split the entry fee which would come out to about $575 per person.
Although they have not finalized the qualification requirements for 2013, I expect them to be same as this year so you would need a timed documented OW swim of at least one mile from this summer. Also, it is non-wetsuit (with water temperatures of 78-80 in August, it is too warm for one anyway)
Thanks,
David
