Have been a competitive swimmer for 30+ years. This year I'm branching out and getting into open water swimming. I'm signed up for a 5k in Aug. and Slam the Dam in Oct. Has anyone done the Great Salt Lake Open Water Swim? The salinity of the GSL is around 12%. Water temp is in the 60's. Don't want to wear a wet suit since I don't want to be any more buoyant than I need to be. The race is only a mile, so I'm thinking just suck it up and go for it. Anyone that has swum this race in the past, I'd appreciate some feedback on your experience.

Sue, Gordon talked me into swimming the 1-mile race last year and I'm glad I did. Yes, the lake is incredibly salty and unless you swim there regularly like Gords and a few others, it takes some getting used to. However, I've found that if you are sure to exhale out of your nose and not your mouth while underwater, it is much more enjoyable. Admittedly, my mouth was pretty thrashed for a day or two after the race, but it really was my own doing (stupid mouth-breather). And personally, I wouldn't recommend a wet suit. You float pretty easily out there anyway. Good luck this weekend. It really is a fun race!
