Great Salt Lake Open Water Swim

Have been a competitive swimmer for 30+ years. This year I'm branching out and getting into open water swimming. I'm signed up for a 5k in Aug. and Slam the Dam in Oct. Has anyone done the Great Salt Lake Open Water Swim? The salinity of the GSL is around 12%. Water temp is in the 60's. Don't want to wear a wet suit since I don't want to be any more buoyant than I need to be. The race is only a mile, so I'm thinking just suck it up and go for it. Anyone that has swum this race in the past, I'd appreciate some feedback on your experience.

  • I swim in the Great Salt Lake 2-3 times a week. I'd swim there everyday, but it does take a full day to allow your mouth to recover. But that also depends on how far you swim. I typically like to get in at least 3 miles per session. For a one mile swim it doesn't do much to your mouth. The GSL is my favorite lake to swim in at the moment. Don't listen to people who haven't swam in it. Or only swam a couple times in it, then gave up. You gotta take their negativity and sarcasm with a grain of salt. It really is a great place to swim.
