By my count, there are six organized swims of 25K (15.5 miles) or longer in the United States next year:
- the Tampa Bay Marathon Swim
- the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim
- Swim Across the Sound
- the Ederle Swim
- a new 25K in Pensacola
- and, the various stages of the 8 Bridges Hudson River Swim.
You can add another to that list. September 8, 2012, Phil White and the Northeast Kingdom O.W.S. Association (the folks behind the Kingdom Swim) will put on a 25-mile swim in Lake Memphremagog between Newport, VT and Magog, Quebec. That's right - you get to swim across an international border. :canada:
For more info, see the official website. The field is limited to 20 swimmers.
As you begin planning for next year, let me also remind you of my U.S. Marathon Swim Calendar, which includes all organized swims of 10K (6 miles) or longer. I've been adding 2012 dates as they become available.

The 7 new coaches for 2012 are not online yet (soon!) but are listed on page 19 of the Jan-Feb Swimmer mag (you are a US Masters Swimmer, yes? Otherwise, you can't access the workouts posted by those coaches).
Quick rundown:
Laura Schuster, Mountain View Masters: new swimmers, tris
Eric Mitchell, Red Tide Swimmers, NY: competitive stroke and IM training
Mallory Mead, So. Cal. Aquatics: OW
Leslie Livingston ("The Fortress"): High-intensity, Pithy Sprinty stuff
Patrick Brundage: high volume
Sara McLarty: triathlon training
Danielle Newton, Durham Area Masters Aquatics: expectant mothers
The Workouts forum should still have the workouts from the 2011 USMS coaches, which will be archived for future reference.
Edit to add: to join USMS (and so get access to workouts), there is a "join/renew" button on the top page of the site, which takes you here:
http://www.usms.org/reg/
You don't have to be good or fast or compete or even swim organized workouts with a team to join.
Thanks so much for your detailed answer! Yes, I'm a member of usms and I look forward to seeing the new workouts online.
