Hi folks, I was wondering where most people were doing there open water swimming in Massachusetts?
I had a sad experience today - I went to Lake Cochituate, with an escort (we rented a kayak), and about 100 meters into the swim, we had a lifeguard from a nearby beach telling me I couldn't swim in the lake, outside of the buoy area (which was no more than 2ft deep and absolutely tiny. So I swam back and forth a couple times, while my friend kayaked around the beautiful lake for a little while. That's quite a waste a very nice lake I think.
Are other lakes in Massachusetts similar to this? Are there lakes with Kayak rental available that actually let swimmers in the lake?
Good Morning. I live out in springfield and was looking for some good places to get open water training in Western, MA. Although your post is from a while back, I am hoping to get some suggestions. Looking to train for 1/2-1 miles swims.
Thanks in advance. John
There is a group from Great Barrington that swims in Lakes every Wednesday night through August. Great group in some amazing areas, with different ability levels. Swims generally last an hour, so you can get 1-2 miles in. They are followed by a potluck or stop at a local restaurant. This year USMS membership is required, and will only cost you $2 to cover the cost for an in-water lifeguard with cell phone in case there are any issues. PM me for more info.

Hey sydned - I live on the other side of the Green Mtns from Harriman (25 min), give a holler the next time you plan to come this way, maybe I can join you for a dip! GregJS is even closer than me to that great spot.
