Going on vacation near the FLA panhandle and was wondering when the best time for an open water swim is (during the day)? Not very familiar with the currents/tides and was interested when the calmest time would be for a nice practice.

you need to be much more specific - the water is beautiful but waves and chop at the beachfront is more dependent on weather conditions than simply time of day
the board is a great resource but you might google local tri- training & clubs
if you're in the panhandle Sunday, May 22, this swim is pretty impressive - pensacola to gulf breeze
