  • So, how do you gauge if you're ready to do a 25k? I love the 10k distance. I am not fast, but I am steady, and I did 3 open water 10k's last summer, and one 10k postal, plus some 5k's and 2 milers. My average 10k time is 3 and a half hours. My usual 5k time is an hour and a half. My time for Big Shoulders was slow, but I am proud I finished under those conditions. I did the 10k at Noblesville last year, and was so impressed with the level of organization of that event. The water was crazy hot, but there was such attention to our safety, I did it anyway, despite training in Lake Michigan and having scant hot water experience, and I had a wonderful time. I'd like to do another 10k this summer, but ideally, it would be USMS certified. I did enjoy the Diamond Lake 10k, that was a hoot, I would do that again, even if it's not USMS certified. Anyway, how do you know if it's doable? I am a slow twitch muscle kind of a gal, I THINK I could keep chugging along, but it is obviously a very serious distance. Also, how hot will it be--it's earlier this year, right? Perhaps not so hot? Finally, if you have 10k open water races to recommend, what are they? That distance I know I can do and enjoy.

Finally, if you have 10k open water races to recommend, what are they? That distance I know I can do and enjoy. There's a wonderful 6-mile in Santa Barbara, CA: www.semananautica.com/.../18 It's a small race -- maybe around 30 swimmers. The water generally hovers around the high 50s to mid 60s. And of course you get to hang out in Santa Barbara and maybe even eat at La Super Rica: http://tinyurl.com/4fdyqpo

  • smeltgirl, I'm a member of the host team and swim in Morse Reservoir nearly every weekend between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day. On average the water temperature should be about 7-10 degrees cooler than last year's 10K, probably in the mid-high 70's (74-78). As far as whether or not you're ready for that distance, I had only one swim longer than a 5K - a 10K in 2007 - when I completed this same 25K in 2008. I also swam in last year's 10K in Noblesville. I consider myself more of a short course swimmer so the training for the 25K was intense for me. I checked the 25K off my list so I'm opting for a relay this summer. Good luck if you choose to swim it. We'll see you in Noblesville.
  • Give it a try !!! You can't train a 25K , so just go do it.
  • If the 25K isn't your gig the relay 25K is a blast!!!!! I think my team's gonna win the old-folk division this year!!
  • Another update from the 25K Event Director... The solo field is more than half full with 20 days remaining until early registration ends on April 23. After that the price goes up and the number of slots diminishes. This is your last chance until 2014. Don't delay!
