Does anyone know of any places around NYC where it is legal to do open swims of 1-2 miles?
I just did an open water swim at Orchard Beach over the weekend, but the swimming area is well under a mile wide. I haven't swum at any of the other beaches like Far Rockaway and Coney Island. Are the swimming areas any wider there?
I'm planning a low-profile 24-hr endurance event next month for about 9-12 guys which will incorporate open water swimming. To make sure everything goes smoothly I want to find an area where we won't be arrested or anything.

Do you know if those routes are only open from 10-6, or if nobody would mind if we jumped in around 6-7am?
i know people get in early.... if you keep a low profile, it shouldn't be a problem.
parking is free on sunday at the public lot on brighton 4 st.
