Legal swimming areas in NYC

Does anyone know of any places around NYC where it is legal to do open swims of 1-2 miles? I just did an open water swim at Orchard Beach over the weekend, but the swimming area is well under a mile wide. I haven't swum at any of the other beaches like Far Rockaway and Coney Island. Are the swimming areas any wider there? I'm planning a low-profile 24-hr endurance event next month for about 9-12 guys which will incorporate open water swimming.
