Does anyone have any good tips for swimming an open water race in water that may be 87 or higher with air temps potentially in the 90's?
I am wondering if it would be a good idea to take a course of antibiotics prior to the race or just after..
We have had record high average temperatures for May and June in VA making swimming pools and lakes like bathtubs, the later without chorine.

The water will be too hot for the snapping turtle's. They will be all out cooling off on a log. better add that .276 back in. Turtle soup is a great treat by the way.

hmmmmm. And yet you claim to be able to do a 6000 yd workout without a toilet break. Or were you just bragging to the bladderially challenged (me)?
I doubt you'll wee during a 2 mile race, so if you retain the wee weight, and subtract the mass lost due to snapping turtles (14 of them), you will end up with the following:
Actual weight lost = predicted weight loss + retained wee - Snapping Turtlage
3.142 = 3.417 + 0.001 - 0.276

The water temperature at the USMS 2-Mile Cable Open Water Championship was much cooler then expected as a freaky rain storm came through the night before the race and ended as it started dropping the water temperature at least 4 degrees. The air was comfortable and there was a cloud cover.
The biggest loser was Jim Thorton but I am pretty sure much of that was from him talking so much while we were in line for the race... He lost 5 lbs.
A technical problem with the sand may have goofed up the results. Next race I'll be a little more scientific, get a better scale.. and keep the scale away from the sand.
We had 12 people weigh in about half and half sex wise. Weight loss was between 2 lbs (me, I guess I didn't swim hard enough as my time reflects..) but the mean was 3 lbs.
I invite others to participate in this and send me the results. Over the next year I'd like (swim name, air and water temperature, sunny or cloudy, distance, sex, age, time, starting weight, ending weight, if possible I'd like to track the persons race time as well)
As soon as I get caught up with my work I'll create a little form that can be used. I think that it is important to track this. Ironically my elder Aunt was admitted yesterday to the Emergency room for dehydration.
A personal observation, I think I gained the weight and a little extra back by the end of the day from eating so much after the race. It might be interesting to get a weight the next morning too?

Now I know what that scale was there for! I was puzzled to see it seemingly abandoned at the beach. I bet I lost a few lbs that day...I had an awful headache due to dehydration the rest of the day. My own fault, I definitely didn't drink enough beforehand.

This is exactly why I am working on this. kidney stones from dehydration is not fun.... so don't make it a habit... drink water before and during workouts too!
