How to train for an 8K

Due to other injuries and issues keeping me from the bike and not running very much, I am dedicating this season to the OWS :) Found a great looking race at Lake Mead, 8K point to point. The longest race I've done is 4K in an ironman, I've done several 2 milers. IM swim was 59 minutes so I am not super fast (in "real swimmer" terms) but can get it done I've got 5 months to train for it. Typical week for me is Masters Tues/Thurs with 3000-3500 per session, and 1 OWS of 1 mile, increasing to 2 over the next couple weeks. This is what I did for the IM as well. Should I be working up to 4 mile OWS? Adding 1 day in the pool? 2 days? Working towards 5K sessions? Any advice appreciated

chris - 'fetch' has implications for how intense conditions might be on lake mead... basically it is the distance over water that wind has a chance to stir things up. the degree of difficulty for an 8K swim will vary with conditions if you're comfortable in open water than 3500 - 4000 m twice a week should be enough to get you through an 8K swim. do intervals and churn the distance Ah, OK, thanks for the new word :) Lake Mead can get VERY windy. Having just done 1.5 miles in pretty good chop and swell on Sunday (probably my hardest OWS ever), that would make for a very very very long morning. Couple years ago they had issues with the swim at Silverman, a tri they hold at Lake Mead, conditions were pretty brutal. They are starting this at 6 am, probably to avoid wind if possible.
